What types of cargo are dangerous?
According to international standards, over 3000 types of substances are considered “hazardous.” Improper transportation of these substances can pose a risk to human health and the environment due to road accidents. The list of such goods in Ukraine fully corresponds to the European classification and is divided into nine classes. The class designation indicates the level of danger: the higher the number, the more hazardous the cargo is.
The most frequently transported hazardous cargoes include:
- Explosives, ammunition (Class 1)
- Poisonous and flammable gases (Class 2)
- Fuels of any kind (Class 3)
- Infectious, toxic substances (Class 6)
- Radioactive materials (Class 7)
To determine the category of such substances, an international system of digital and light indication is used. For instance, hazardous gases are marked with white or green color, flammable substances are marked with red, explosives with orange, and chemical compounds that can emit flammable gases upon contact with water are indicated with blue. Substances that quickly catch fire are depicted with a red striped icon featuring a flame pictogram. Corresponding pictograms are also applied for other types of hazardous cargoes.
